Welcome!

Hi there! I assume you’re looking at this blog because a career in medicine is your goal. You wake up thinking about wanting to be a doctor, you think about it going through your day, or you think about it before you drift off to sleep. Maybe you’re like I was at your age and you can’t think of any other job you could be happy doing other than being a physician. And maybe you’re also like I was at your age: a first-generation college student who doesn’t even know a Black physician who you can walk up to and ask about their path to this profession you dream about.

Because let’s face it, most of our moms, dads, and close relatives aren’t doctors. And, therefore, we as Black students lack the important mentoring that comes from conversations with someone who looks like us, understands our background, and is where we want to someday be.  That’s why I created this blog. I’m here to be like that cool auntie we all love. Not the one who is only trusted to bring the paper products at Thanksgiving and who doesn’t realize that talking on her cell on speakerphone in public is not okay…no thanks, I’ll be the other auntie. The one who has been there and is eager to share my triumphs and fails along the way and to drop knowledge and advice about what you should be doing as an undergraduate to make yourself the best possible candidate.

You may ask what makes me qualified to tell you what you need to do to get into medical school?

  1. I’ve been there.
  2. In addition to seeing patients, I am academic medicine faculty (training medical students and residents) and have served and currently serve as a mentor to several pre-med students, current medical students, and residents.
  3. I’ve reviewed a looooot of applications and conducted many interviews in my day for post-bac medical programs, medical school, residency, and fellowships.
  4. Because I just love Black people and I have a sincere desire to see an increase in the number of Black physicians who we KNOW disproportionately shoulder the load for caring for Black patients.

All of the information you’ll find in future posts will be the most accurate and up-to-date information that I know and can find. And I will present it in the most direct and easy-to-follow way that I can. I’m blessed to have some awesome Black doc friends and their input into this content will help to make it even more fantastic than I can even imagine.

The goal is that I will lay the frame and you’ve got to do the work. And you CAN do it. This is super cliché but, believe me, if I did it you can too. As a pre-med college student, you’re already on the way! Organic chemistry has nothing on you! Whatever your college classification, use this blog as a means to make sure you’re on track or use it to re-direct yourself and get on track.

Start by taking a look at the Pre-Med Perks section of the website and check out the Pre-Med Checklist that I created.
